THIS PATTERN HAS BEEN CORRECTED. I've deleted the old version below. You can download a .pdf of this corrected pattern here:
But what is it?
When Sebastian was born (all of 2 weeks ago), we had lots of cute head covering options since many people had given us staggeringly cute hats.
However, newborns have super tiny, often long, ever-changing, ever-rounding heads that seem to need a different hat every day. The usual cotton "receiving hats" don't give or cling nearly enough, and you're left using the kind of icky hospital-provided mesh hat. Even now at a couple weeks of age, Sebastian is in the 10th percentile headwise (he's a little peanut, I swear), and every hat we have swivels around and around on his head and makes him end up looking like a Catholic bishop. So I created...the Fixie!

Oh, Larissa, that is adorable, and such a simple/cute pattern. Baz is so tiny and sweet!

Hey - love the hat and have one suggestion. You can knit this in the round, and when its the right length, turn inside out and three needle bind off. You get the same effect with much less seaming. Also, if you devide the stitches into thirds - you can do a tri-corner hat by 3-needle binding off each third to itself when folded.

Awesome hat....and awesome model! Thanks for the pattern. I'll have to get one on my needles soon for my niece-to-be. I have just the purple and green Cascade Fixation for the project...

Thank you for the pattern. Just started knitting last week after being motivated by how cute the meathead had is! I was sad to know I would have to wait for the book to come out for that. The fixie was my first real project with real wool (http://web.mac.com/grandduke/iWeb/Smell%20the%20Roses/Susanne/E605BD26-7750-41AD-BFF2-AB87E844D324.html) I love it. Thanks so much for the pattern and inspiration!

I love the pattern just have one question. In the picture you show 7 changes of color in the 6 rows then 12 rows of color A then 5 changes of color then the 2 rows and 5 ribbing. I thought the l2 rows were the middle and the folding point. But, that would not put it in the center if you do 7 on one side of the 12 and 5 on the other side. Please let me know if there is something I do not see. Thanks

I found your pattern through a google search. Love the hat! Can you tell me how many total inches long of st st if it's knitted in one color?
Thx! :-)

I used this pattern yesterday but I just wanted you to know that according to your picture of the hat flat before sewing, the pattern is wrong. There are 2 too many color changes in the pattern before you hit the 12 rows in the middle (top of the hat), making an extra 6 rows of each color on the first side. Done this way the colors won't line up when folded in half. Unfortunately I followed the pattern exactly and now have to take it mostly apart.
This is also what Betty Ferri is asking about.

I'm knitting this little hat and am curious how long should it be before sewing. It looks really long.
