We camped. For a whole week, with four kids, with smoky fires that have rendered everything we own hot-dog-smelling, with endless bacon (our trip could have been sponsored by the pork industry). The kids went over the dunes on a 4-mile round-trip hike to the beach and came back all Lord of the Flies with t-shirts wrapped around their heads and walking sticks. They played for hours at a sandy playground that was right on our F Loop. And Stev and I got to sit and drink lots of wine. And coffee. The only electric device we brought for the whole week was this.
And we got to knit.
The green...thing...above was an emergency hat for Sebastian because I forgot to bring one and camping in Oregon gets super cold at night no matter the time of year. It's a silly hat, actually probably one of the ugliest things I've ever made, but it did the trick.
I also knitted a couple of other things - one being Ester from Knitty - that I'm not really happy with yet. I'm still working on figuring out how to make it close and look right and it's cool but doesn't really sit the way it should. And, dammit, it was meant to be a gift and so it sucks that it doesn't work. Sigh. Back to indoor knitting, with AC.

LOL @ Lord of the Flies!!! We went camping a few weeks ago with another family and it was great to have so many kids together (a total of six, from 2yrs to 8yrs). I loved watching the interaction between them all...and we also ate copious amounts of meat on our trip- lots of tri-tip, bacon, and bratwurst! LOL There's just something about camping and meat that go together...especially that bacon-y smell first thing in the AM.

Fabulous. Hope the mosquitoes weren't too bad. I love camping!

Camping is all about being outside. We head up to Lake George for some wilderness ourselves, Fairy houses to be built, trees to be climbed, trails to be blazed (I have a 3 hour limit), and the pork products, of course. We drive the campground nuts with coffee and bacon first thing in the morning. In fact, my idea of camping bliss, it to get up make coffee and breakfast, drink the coffee and knit for a couple of hours until it is time to make lunch, then maybe some beach and knitting or walking around, then some refreshment, dinner and campfire. Repeat.

I love the only electrical device that you brought--you've got your head screwed on right, that's what I say! We share the same priorities:)

Just wanted to thank you - if you are Sarah Gilbert - for making the pattern for the cute blue hat on the cover of KNITALONG available. Yes, I probably could have figured it out on my own, but I appreciate your letting the public in on it. Best wishes to you and yours.
