Hi knitters of the free scarf pattern,
Thank you for your interest in this scarf! The pattern is a simple Razor Shell lace, and if you need help
with it you may want to google that lace or look for it in Barbara
Walker. The truth is I just don't blog as often as I used to, and I seldom get back to these 2007 posts to offer pattern support on my freebies and tutorials.
That said, below is the pattern, which does work--hundreds have made it--and so should not require too much support.
To answer one common question: I used a typical plain bind off. The ends are pointy because I cast off loosely, wet blocked them and pinned them out hard.
Enjoy,
Larissa
Original blog post:
This is an old project, from 2004, that I've been thinking about lately. It was so lovely, soft, simple. A perfect gift knit, and it was a gift, for my friend Kim. I made it for her right before we went on our first Cycle Oregon adventure together.
I was cleaning up some things, and thought it would be good to make a post with the pattern for this scarf. For me, because I want to make it again (maybe with Malabrigo and bigger needles this time), and for anyone else who might like to try it.
Yarn: Classic Elite Miracle, Pressed Olive (but we know it's really creamed spinach), 2 skeins make a 4.5 foot or so scarf.
Needles: US size 8.
Cast on 33.
Row 1 (and all odd rows): K2, yo, k3, slip 1 k2tog psso, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, slip 1 k2tog psso, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, slip 1 k2tog psso, k3, yo, k2.
Row (and all even rows): Purl.
Make sure to block with plenty of pins to make the lace come to life.

Wow, that's really lovely!
Just yesterday I was wanting to try out lace on something I'd actually wear (the knitty pattern Branching Out is good for beginners, I hear, but not my style), and this looks perfect. Thank you!

I made a couple of scarves using your creamed spinach pattern, after you originally posted it. It does make a lovely scarf and I'll probably go back to it again. Thanks for sharing!

HI- I'm new to your blog. I love your Juniper Bonnet pattern. It helped me greatly this weekend to figure out how to finish a bonnet I was working on. Thanks! You make so many beautiful things.

Purty! I have some yarn bought from a spinner at the Arizona State Fair that just may be perfect--it'll be Mashed Turnips to go with the Creamed Spinach.
Mmmmm, comfortfoodyarns.
(Hey, sounds like a brand name, no?)

First visit to your blog-- and when I saw your spinach scarf.. I realized that I had knit a scarf using the same stitch pattern out of a soft thin mohair.. w/ subtle color changes.. a soft periwinkle blue for a best friend that I rarely see now-- because we live thousands of miles apart now.
I liked it so much that a couple of years ago- I made one for myself. I need to go and dig it out of the 'scarf pile'.. and wear it this week.
Your scarf is lovely.

I am in the process of making this scarf for my Mom. I love it and so does she. It seems though, in order to even out each edge, that each right side row should start with k3 insteaad of k2. Maybe I'm not following the pattern right though...

Hi,
Semi-New knitter here. Love the Cream Spinach Scarf pattern and would love to use it to make a shawl. Could you tell me how I would increase the pattern. Would I just repeat the yo and k2tog's?

This scarf is lovely and I've always wanted to try Malabrigo. It's going on my "to knit" pile for sure. Thanks.

Hi, Love the pattern, but when I tried , the third row did not work out (I could not complete the pattern because the number of stitches was off)...how many stitches should be on the needle after the first row? I am a beginner and would love to try the cream of spinach scarf!!!!!
Thanks so much!!! Terry

I haven't been blogging for quite some time. However, I'm hoping people got advice from a knitting friend. The casting off on this scarf is no different than any other! Knit 2, slip one over the other, knit one more, slip over, etc. I hope you found what you needed.

Does anyone have the recipe for Cream of Spinach Soup from the Moosewood Cookbook?
Ingredients include: fresh spinach, potatoes, onion, carrots, milk, a little flour, nutmeg and butter. You blend it in a blender.
THANKS!

I'm probably not doing it right but after the first row i'm left with 35 stitches... surely that's not right? I can't think what I'm doing wrong... any advice appreciated.

Hi - I love the scarf pattern - just like all the others - just about half way finished - but like many others, curious about the ending - will it have that pretty little wavy edge like the other end if I just cast off after the pattern row - not sure what to do?? I will use this pattern many more times - so easy for the fancy results

For the beginners who said they needed a little help: at each row the number of stitches should always be 33. Maybe a definition of slip 1 K2tog psso will help.
Slip 1 stitch onto the right needle, knit 2 together, then pass the stitch (that you just slipped earlier) over your last k2tog stitch (almost like a bind-off move.) I hope that helped.

I love how you laced the scarf and how it came out so nicely in terms of separation. My mom made me a scarf with patterns of soccer balls and I still wear it to this day.

The casting off "Knit 2, slip one over the other, knit one more, slip over, etc" is not working out. The final result is not the pointy ends. I need some help please.
